Hier in den Sübstaaten gibt es ganz außerordentlich große und hübsche Tomaten (und Paprikas, Bohnen, Kürbisse…). Sie sind vielfarbig und haben einen sehr intensiv tomatigen Geschmack. Ob sie reif sind, erkennt man am tomatigen Duft. Diese Tomate hier konnte ich nicht geruchlich wahrnehmen, als ich sie von der Bäuerin gekauft habe, weil ich nämlich stark verschnupft war. Eine ortsansässige fremde Frau half mir dabei. Sie war sogar so nett, mir die Tomate zu überlassen, die sich zum Malen am besten eignete, weil sie die vielfältigste Farbmischung aufwies. Das war eine liebe Geste von ihr!

Farmers in the South produce an amazing variety of vegetables and fruit. Visiting the local farmers‘ market, I was particularly struck by the very big and very beautiful tomatoes on display there. They are multicoloured, as are, by the way, different varieties of peppers, beans and gourds in these parts. You can tell if a tomato is ripe by its very intense tomato-y scent. This tomato here I wasn’t able to test-smell before buying because I was severely congested at the time. A local lady who was a customer at the farmers‘ market like myself helped me find it. Or to be more correct: she had found this tomato first and was actually getting ready to pay for it. However, when I said that I’m looking for a tomato to paint she gave it to me. She said this one had the richest mix of colours and would thus make for a lovely picture. What a kind gesture!
