(as per usual: First the German, then the English version) Manchmal habe ich einfach nicht so viel Zeit zum Malen, wie ich es gerne hätte. Dann machen ich was Kleines.

I don’t always have as much time for painting as I would like, and when that is the case, I try to do something on a small scale. By which I mean in an even smaller format than I do anyway 🙂 Mini value studies and small watercolour sketches, for example, are pretty satisfying: I can familiarise myself with an appealing subject, play around with light effects and try out colour schemes, and all of this in a playful way. Helps weeding out ideas which just won’t fly with me and my skill level. The series of mini sketches in graphite and watercolour below really helped me realise that one of my ideas isn’t as interesting as a painting as I had intitially thought; the pencil sketch was ok but with colours it seemed very flat. I won’t tell you which one it is; can you spot it? The other ideas which I really like I can start working on next time I have a day off.
