Fieldwork takes me all kinds of places these days, and often I add an hour of watercolour sketching to the end of my working day. Intent on doing this I strolled over a big cemetary on the outskirts of Berlin on Wednesday. This wooden church was the obvious candidate for my end-of-the-day sketch! Albeit it truly presented a challenge in terms of format. I decided that the height should be more important than the width, which is why the church is cut off a bit on both sides. One more thing: my scanner doesn’t do well with cerulean blue – it’s as if it couldn’t read it, it’s usually just white, and so I photographed this sketch rather than scan it. Does anybody else have this problem with their scanners?
Die Feldforschung führt mich gerade in die verschiedensten Gegenden, und oft hänge ich an meinen Arbeitstag noch eine schnelle Aquarellskizze von dem Ort, in dem ich bin, ran. Mit dem Ziel, genau das zu tun, schlenderte ich am Mittwoch über den Berliner Südwestfriedhof. Diese Stabkirche war der offensichtliche Kandidat für eine Aquarellskizze! Obgleich ich zugeben muss, dass sie mich hinsichtlich des Formats meines Skizzenbuchs vor eine Herausforderung stellte. Ich entschied mich, dass die vertikalen Ausmaße wichtiger sein sollten als die seitlichen. Deswegen ist das Gebäude zu den Seiten hin gekappt – hat nicht raufgepasst! Noch eine Sache: mein Scanner kann nicht gut mit Himmelblau umgehen, das wird immer alles weißlich dargestellt. Deswegen habe ich das Bild fotographiert. Hat noch jemand dieses Problem mit dem Scanner?
