In yesterday’s post I already hinted at my attempts to mix greys, and here are a few more examples of it (and some orange mixes, too). This grey-mix topic was a crucial one for me in my own development. An eye-opener, if you will, which is why I got my teeth in it last weekend. The theory is that once three primaries convene, greys will abound and they will be colourful and varied. Yay! Check out this painting by my friend Anke: superb example of the use of different grey hues, thus gesturing at brickwork and other stones in the buildings. Grey mixes with three components are in the first row. My favourite of those is the second one from the left. Grey mixes with two components are in the second row of blobs. My go-to mix for grey to date is ultramarine+burnt umber, I have to admit. You can see something like it on the far right in the second row, though this one also contains Delf blue. Delft blue is actually a great base for greys. Indian Red might work, too, instead of a proper earth colour. Many possibilities!
Gestern habe ich ja schon angedeutet, dass das Anmischen von bunten Grautönen eine Sache ist, die mich fasziniert. Für mich war die Erkenntnis, dass es „buntes Grau“ gibt, ein wichtiger Meilenstein. Buntes Grau hat nämlich mehr Leben und viel mehr Einsatzmöglichkeiten. Deswegen habe ich mich gern in die Erkundung von Grautönen vertieft, wo ich am Wochenende eh schon einmal beim Testen war. Die Grundidee ist: treffen alle drei Primärfarben aufeinander, wird ein Grau entstehen. Oder werden verschiedenste Grautöne entstehen, wie man bei meiner Freundin Anke im Bild „Kalter Tag“ gut sehen kann. In der oberen Reihe der Mischkleckse habe ich Grautöne aus drei Farben gemischt. Mein Favorit ist der zweite Klecks von links. In der zweiten Reihe sind Grautöne aus einem Blau und einem Erdton. Indischrot benutze ich dafür eigentlich nie, aber es scheint sich zu eignen. Meine Standardvariante ist Ultramarin + Umbra gebrannt. Vandyck-Braun und Delftblau ergeben auch ein tolles, wenn auch ziemlich kaltes, Grau. Irgendwie purzelte mir dann noch eine Reihe Orangetöne dazwischen…
