This week, I happend to travel deep into the Berlin hinterland. I was shown (by a very friendly research participant – this was a work trip) to this little wooden chapel. It is tiny, measuring barely 10 x 15 m or so. In the past it had been used for worship and as a funeral parlour. Between 1975 and the early 1990s the chapel was left to decay; luckily, after German reunification and thanks to a private investor it was restored to its former beauty. Today, the theatre club and the AA meet in it (not at the same time, I’m sure).

Diese Woche hat es mich ins Berliner Umland verschlagen. Eine sehr freundliche Forschungsteilnehmerin (ich war dienstlich unterwegs) hat mir diese kleine Kapelle gezeigt, die sog. Alte Kapelle. Sie misst vielleicht gerade mal 10 x 15 m und ist aus Holz mit einer umlaufenden Galerie. Früher wurde sie tatsächlich für Gottesdienste benutzt; gleichzeitg diente sie als Leichenhalle. Von 1975 bis kurz nach der Wende wurde sie nicht benutzt, dann in privater Initiative wieder aufgebaut. Heute probt dort der Theaterverein und die Anonymen Alkoholiker halten ihre Treffen ab (wahrscheinlich nicht gleichzeitig).
