Small or midsize American towns are fascinating to many Europeans because they really look very different. This gouache sketch shows two elements which stood out to me: the massive horizontals represented by the traffic lights and the typical facades – warehouse style with a bit of a decorated gable on the top and with awnings (some of which are very pretty) – along the High Street. Salisbury, North Carolina is a particularly pretty town and I look forward to painting it again in the future!
Kleine und mittlere amerikanische Städte sind aus europäischer Sicht oft faszinierend, weil sie wirklich ganz anders aussehen. Diese Gouache-Skizze zeigt zwei Elemente auf, die für mich wirklich besonders amerikanisch sind: die massiven Horizontalen der Ampeln und die typischen Fassaden an der Hauptstraße – vom Typ her sind die Gebäude Lagerhallen, die mit Giebeln und etwas Stuck attraktiver gestaltet und mit Markisen, von denen manche richtig hübsch sind, versehen wurden. Salisbury, North Carolina ist eine besonders hübsche Stadt, und ich freue mich darauf, dort bald wieder zu malen!
