Deichstr._Studie

We were in Hamburg last week and had lunch in a rustic little restaurant on the water. Going back up to the street afterwards I saw a spectacular light display: a group of people deep in the shadows and dramatic sunlight and shadow intermingled on the facades behind them. I took a quick photo, did a value sketch on the same day and tried it out in gouache today. I’m pleased with it; it works as a subject for an urban painting. I think this method – value sketches, colour and composition studies first and larger painting afterwards – is generally good for any medium, be it acrylics, watercolour or oil. I draw and paint the studies really quite small and quite quickly. They help me get to know the subject and ask myself important questions such as: where is my focal point here? Hopefully this will make it easier to be quite loose when I take this to a larger canvas.
