This is an attempt at a sunset. The sky had only just cleared for the first time that day and I thought ’now or never‘ and set out. Time was of the essence, and the only spot that I could reach quickly that evening was right next to a busy country road. Strange, I know, but I liked the diagonals which the road created in relation to the fields, the horizon and the open sky. I did not like the incredible speed with which the sun went down though! Jeepers! When I finally got to the block-in stage the paints that I had mixed were no longer the ones that I saw in the sky. So in terms of colours I had to work from memory for most of this painting which is far from ideal. I worked fairly quickly and ended up simplifying most things in this painting. In the main, therefore, this painting is still at the block-in stage but because I took some time mixing the right colours I think it (and I) can get away with it 🙂
Ich habe neulich draußen einen Sonnenuntergang gemalt. Der Himmel klarte gegen 16 Uhr zum ersten Mal an dem Tag auf und ich dachte mir ‚jetzt oder nie‘, schnappte mir meine Malsachen und los ging’s. Mein Malflecken direkt neben der Straße scheint erst einmal ungewöhnlich, aber so habe ich eine starke Diagonale in der Komposition, die Leben und Bewegung in diese ansonsten doch sehr ruhige Szene bringt. Das war also gut. Die Schnelligkeit, mit der die Sonne verschwand, war allerdings weniger gut! Als ich mit dem Farbenmischen fertig war und es ans Auftragen ging, waren am Himmel schon längst andere Farben zu sehen als auf meiner Palette. Sei’s drum, ich konnte das nicht aufholen und habe größtenteils aus der Erinnerung an die ersten 10 Minuten gemalt – und Vieles weggelassen, anders ging es nicht. Ich glaube, weil die Farben diszipliniert angemischt waren, ist es trotzdem ein rundes, ganzes Freilichtbild geworden.
