Getting ready to work on a commissioned painting for me means lots of pencil sketches to figure our the composition and the values and some little colour studies to clarify that part to myself, too. I mostly have reference photos, but I try not to rely on these too much, especially not for colour. Plus, there’s usually something missing in them or they contain a few compositional elements too many, so you have to sit down and think about which ones to leave out or put elsewhere. I love this kind of preparation work because it helps me get into the groove of the new painting. For this reason alone I can recommend preparatory sketches and mini paintings from the depth of my heart, but also, like I said, for clarifying to oneself the overall design of the piece. Well, as my next commissioned painting is a landscape with poppy fields I thought I’d start by studying poppies. They’re finally in bloom and I enjoyed sitting with them out in the field. Some of my neighbour’s bellflowers also found their way onto that same page, as well as a few thoughts.
