Our pastor made a very valid point in yesterday’s sermon. That Christ appeared to Constantine in 312 AD and told him, right before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, that he shall conquer in the sign of the cross („in hoc signo vinces“) which he did, whereupon Constantine established Christianity as the dominant religion in the Roman Empire, has led to the grave historical misunderstanding that Christ was all about victory and strength and that therefore Christians could justifiably do violence onto others. The true sign of Christ is the lamb though, the little, meek and helpless lamb. Perpetrating violence onto others is never a Christian thing to do, whereas helping weak and impoverished persons always is. – This is part of my St. Nicolai series. It is intended as a preliminary sketch for a larger painting. My first attempt at such a one was not a very happy one though. I’ll keep working on this idea, however.

Unser Pastor hat gestern in der Predigt was sehr Interessantes gesagt. Dass Jesus dem Kaiser Konstantin vor der Schlacht an der Milvischen Brücke im Jahr 312 n.Chr. erschienen ist und ihm gesagt hat „in diesem Zeichen sollst du siegen“ und dass Konstantin das auch tat und das Christentum zur römischen Staatsreligion erklärte, führte zu dem groben historischen Missverständnis, dass es Christen um Stärke und Dominanz ginge und man im Namen Jesu deswegen auch andere (niedere) Völker auslöschen könne. Das wahre Zeichen Jesu ist aber das Lamm, das kleine, liebe, hilflose Lamm. Anderen Gewalt anzutun ist niemals christlich, wohingegen den Schwachen und Armen zu helfen es eigentlich immer ist. – Dieses Bild gehört in meine St. Nicolai-Sammlung. Ein erstes Aquarell habe ich schon auf der Basis dieser Skizze versucht, aber es gefällt mir nicht so. Ich muss mich da noch weiter reinarbeiten.
