The way I came to watercolour painting, I learned that a smaller palette is more, that highly and purely pigmented paints are best and that you can mix all the colours you need yourself. I learned about neutral tones which are mixex using three primaries, and I was happily mixing all my colurful greys. That’s how it’s been for years. Then two things happened at the same time: 1. I realised that many urban sketchers have a premixed neutral tone (or several) in their little kits, which means they have shortcuts readymade which I don’t have. 2. I came across neutral tint – not the Schmincke one which I am told is very reddish, but the W&N one which is very nice! The next thing that happened is that I found myself opening up to the possibility of broadening my palette (which is a whole different story…I have exciting new hues now!) And the last step in this entire development is me buying a tube of ivory black by Tintoretto. This Italian brand can be highly pigmented but tends towards the impure. Tintoretto ivory black will make solid neutrals though, as my paint swatches and the wee test painting show 🙂
