This is a tiny little contre-jour sketch, just about 4 x 5.5 inches, in my sketchbook. It depicts the watertower in downtown Luneburg. To me personally, it also depicts a modicum of the despair which I felt after walking the city for what seemed like ages without, however, finding a suitable subject to paint. I wanted interesting shadow and light shapes. I also wanted there to be quite a bit more distance in the sketch than there is in this one – the eye can’t really travel on and on to the horizon because it quickly comes up against that concrete wall. But I didn’t care! For this is the first time I actually tried a contre-jour subject and I think I rather like it. The trick is to get everything quite dark enough except for the few light spots. Plus, I have never painted the watertower before (and I really didn’t want to wander around any longer).
Diese Skizze ist ganz klein, vielleicht gerade mal 10 x 14 cm. Sie stellt den Wasserturm hier in Lüneburg im Gegenlight dar. Zusätzlich ist in dem Bild für mich persönlich eine ganze Menge von der Verzweiflung enthalten, die ich bis kurz vor dem Malen empfand. Ich war nämlich eine gefühlte Ewigkeit bei Hitze durch die Stadt getigert, ohne ein geeignetes Motiv zu finden. So schwer sollte das eigentlich nicht sein. Es sollte lediglich interessante Schatten- und Lichtverhältnisse haben. Ich wollte auch gern, dass das Auge in die Ferne wandern kann. Das kann es hier jetzt zwar nicht, im Gegenteil, es prallt ja ziemlich schnell gegen diesen Betonriegel (vom Parkhaus). Aber das war mir alles egal! Ich habe nämlich noch nie ein Bild im Gegenlicht gemalt, obwohl ich schon immer mal Lust drauf hatte. Das war meine Chance und ich habe sie ergriffen! Ich glaube, man muss einfach aufpassen, dass alles bis auf die Lichter auch wirklich ziemlich dunkel wird. – Somit habe ich jetzt auch mal den Wasserturm gemalt.
