We went and visited the birthplace of the Reformation, Wittenberg, last week. As per usual when out and about with family, I didn’t expect to get much sketching, let alone painting done, and so I was super glad when the opportunity arose for me to sketch a bit in the courtyard of Martin Luther’s house. This is one wing of the Augusteum which used to house the university of Wittenberg; the statue in front is of Martin Luther’s wife, Katharina von Bora. I sketched it whilst my sweetheart was taking a tour of Luther’s humble abode. I am really trying to be a bit messier with my sketches these days in the hope that this might make them a bit livelier. Here, I tried to pull this off by combining a pretty careful drawing with a careless wet-in-wet paint application. I like how this came out in my Strathmore watercolour sketchbook. Also interesting: I was so so tired whilst working on this – and I did in fact leave my post in the courtyard to find myself a quiet corner for a little nap – that this scene, to me at least, seems to have something very sleepy about it 😉
