This piece was a real challenge to make. To begin with, because I placed the initial line drawing on top of another illustration which consisted of many lines I had a hard time identifying the lines I had put down. I had to add tone to the places that needed it straight away in order to be able to see what’s what on the page. The first part of the drawing therefore felt more like sculpting, and I have to admit that to the very last actually I felt that I was carving my piece out from what was underneath. I wasn’t at all certain that I could pull it off! In the end I think it’s still a pretty interwoven piece, hence the name, which works a bit better from afar than it does from close up. Not sure I would use a dense illustration like this one again to work over. Hard work, but I’m glad I did it!
