I used a spotlight effect: the area around the sheds is lit, the rest isn’t.

Dear friends, this Sunday was lazy and educational at the same time: First, I lazily sat at my desk watching James Gurney’s wonderful 70 minutes-film ‚Gouache in the Wild‘, then I painted with gouache. Not in the wild, however, because this April weather, entertaining though it is, makes staying indoors mandatory. The apples were done with cake gouache, i.e. with the hard variety. I am fully convinced now that because you need to use water for getting the dry paint smooth for use the paint simply isn’t opaque enough to cover up letters. Tube gouache is much better for that, and I used it in my second exercise of the day. The writing which was on the page (bottom left) was covered up nice and easy – good. This painting of sheds in Tennessee is based on a photo taken in the Smokey Mountains which my mother-in-law sent me just as I was thinking ‚what should I paint next‘. Now for a relaxing evening and then – onward into a new week! May it be a great one for all of us!
