Whilst the town (or city?) of Luneburg has lots to offer, so does the hinterland. It’s pretty flat on the whole, with small indulations (you can’t call them hills really) to the South, the large and beautiful heath to the West and the River Elbe to the North and East. I want to paint in several spots around Luneburg, trying to go there throughout the year and at different times of day, and I have identified most of ‚my‘ spots already. I would love to have a favourite spot along the Elbe, too, but haven’t been able to really settle on one yet. This one here is a strong contender though: it’s got the wide expanse, the characteristic groynes going into the river, and it also features the steep hillside which forms part of the river bank in these parts. I sketched this out in gouache on tan craft paper. I include a pic of my go-to gouache set so that you can see what it is – the easy-peasy 12-pan set you can buy everywhere, at least in Germany you can. Add a tube of white and Bob’s your uncle!

Elbe

Gouachefarben
