I recently taught a workshop which I called ‚Christmas Special‘. First we painted a still life with candle and then a snowy landscape. I composed the still life myself using my still life box. I’m not sure where exactly I got the instructions for it from, but it works which is all that counts. It is an ordinary (but rather large) box that more or less misses one of the smaller side planes. I cut those off so that I could have a lamp shine onto my objects from there. For the still life with candle I had to put the box with the cut-out side up so that the fire wouldn’t singe my box. It worked really well! The snowy landscape was a lot of fun to paint. I just wish I had’ve taken the reference photo myself. I have since painted another snowscape though which I will post soon.
