I am off sick at the moment which isn’t great but at least it allows me to post my newest little concoction. It’s a watercolour scene which I painted on a weekend workshop two days ago. For me, its special meaning lies in the context in which it was painted. I used the workshop to make progress on a portrait of my granny and therefore spent most of my time there to fiddle around with meticulous details such as skin tone, shadow colours, proportions and so on. It’s so important to get that right in a portrait because otherwise it just won’t be a likeness. But it’s also exhausting concentrating in this way for many hours. Eventually I simply couldn’t muster that concentration anymore and had to be done with it. I then turned to my watercolours and thought that I could for once try a wet-in-wet painting. Be wild, you know. My inspiration in terms of technique was Joanne Boone Thomas who is all about letting the paint run hither and thither. I was quite pleased with the look of that, though in the end I had to fiddle around with details, too.
