Vor einer Weile habe ich mit meiner Freundin Lucy, die eine ganz tolle Malerin ist, über Inspirationsquellen gesprochen. Ich hatte den Eindruck, dass Lucy immer in subtropische Gefilde muss, um gute Ideen zu bekommen. Dabei wohnt sie in Neuseeland und hat unglaublich viel tolle Natur um sich rum! Lucy klärte mich auf, dass ich sie vollkommen falsch verstanden hatte. Die meisten guten Ideen kommen ihr bei der Hausarbeit: abwaschen, bügeln, Wäsche aufhängen – solche Sachen sind inspirierend. Da konnte ich dann gleich mitgehen, weil ich selbst den Alltag unglaublich interessant finde und immer wieder versuche, ihm seine Geheimnisse bildnerisch abzuringen. Aber so richtig verstanden habe ich Lucy erst, als ich mir neulich mal meinen Wäschetrockner anguckte. Denn der war eine echte Farbinspiration!
Wieder eine kleine geheime Seite des Alltags entdeckt, hehe.
A few months ago my painter friend Lucy whom I admire very much and I were exchanging views on what inspires us. I had falsely believed that Lucy needs a subtropical environment as creative stimulus and that she wouldn’t as easily have creative ideas in her normal environs which are the Canterbury Plains in New Zealand (and the mountains aren’t far off – bliss!). Lucy corrected me, explaining that she has most of her ideas whilst doing everyday household chores. Rinsing the dishes, ironing, doing the laundry – these are the things that inspire her. I immediately agreed because I feel the same way. Everyday life is so beautiful but we don’t see it because we connect beauty with the notion of ’not routine‘. In my paintings, I try to unravel some of everyday life‘ mysteries. However, I only truly understood Lucy when, about a week ago, I came up to the attic to fold my laundry and I beheld this explosion of colour! There truly is so much beauty in our routine life, too.
