Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich im Baumarkt eine Packung dünnes Bastelholz im A3-Format gekauft. Eigentlich hatte ich nach Holz für ein Zeichenbrett gesucht, aber diese Entdeckung war auch sehr willkommen. Die dünnen Panele sind nämlich fürs Malen gut geeignet. Eine Seite ist relativ glatt, hat aber immer noch ausreichend Struktur, die andere Seite ist etwas rauer. Ich habe die glatte Seite zweimal farbig grundiert und dann gleich mal ein Bild begonnen, das mir seit meiner Schottland-Reise im April quasi auf der Zunge lag. Mein Eindruck ist, dass ich noch mehr Schichten Gesso hätte auftragen müssen, weil der Untergrund doch irgendwie gesaugt hat. Aber ein schönes Malgefühl! Kein Trampolin mehr wie bei den Keilrahmen – finde ich gut!

A few weeks ago I went to the DIY store to look for a nice piece of wood to use as a drawing board. I didn’t find one but came away with a pack of thin wood panels in A3 format (12 x 16 in) instead. I thought I might try to use them instead of canvas. So I gessoed them twice and got started on one of the little Scottish landscapes that had inspired me so in April. It’s a lovely feeling to paint on the panel as the woodgrain gives a solid structure. And I don’t miss the bounce from the canvas at all. I think though that I should put more layers of gesso on next time; seemed like the paint was soaked up very quickly.
