At the end of the day (Heidesonne II)

Weil ich noch Farbe auf der Palette übrig hatte, habe ich mir das Thema ‚tiefer Sonnenstand in der Heide‘, das ich vorgestern verarbeitet habe, noch einmal vorgenommen. Diesmal mit dramatischem Schattenwurf auf einem kleinen Hügel und einer Reihe sonnenbeschienener Kiefern am Horizont. Das war so wunderschön da! Inmitten der verblühten Heide und des ausgehendes Tages erlebte ich da auf ganz kleinem Raum einen besonderen Moment der Anmut. Und um den auch angemessen aufzufangen, habe ich mich beim Malen wieder besonders angestrengt: also ich habe die Komposition überlegt, bei der vieles von der ursprünglichen Szene weggelassen wurde, eine Vorskizze im Miniformat angefertigt und eine Untermalung angelegt, und zwar in Terra di Sienna mit Phtalo Blau für die Schatten. Die Leinwand war schon rosa grundiert. Diesmal gibt es von der Untermalung auch ein Bild! Ich lerne dazu, was das (Mit-)Teilen angeht!
Since I still had some paint left over from Tuesday’s take on the sunset over the heath I decided yesterday to work on a similar subject. I chose this scene because I really like the dramatic shadows on the hill with the sunlit forest towards the horizon. It was so beautiful there! Amid the withering heather and the dwindling light I experienced in this little scene a special moment of grace. In order to render this moment appropriately I made an extra effort to practice all the right steps: I thought about the composition which required leaving out quite a bit from the original scene, I made a thumbnail sketch and I started with an underpainting in Terra di Sienna for the midtones and Phtalo Blue for the shadows. The canvas was already primed in Permanent Rose. This time there’s even a photo of the underpainting! I’m getting better at this sharing business 🙂
