I have posted about Gerry the dog a few times already (here and here). Last week I finally met the owners and handed over the A4 drawing and an additional little watercolour painting as a surprise gift. Yay! Well, not really. Whilst the clients liked the drawing ok and bought it too, they felt that the contrasts could have been higher, i.e. the darks could be darker. And the collar could have been left out. I had thought ‚there’s probably something sentimental to that collar‘ because that’s how it was when I had a dog as a kid, but there you go, they wanted the dog all natural. And because the additional watercolour painting did not only have the red collar but also the red leash in it – well, let’s say I felt a bit foolish about my little surprise there. Lessons learned: For commissions, do make sure everyone has the same understanding of artistic license; ask the client detailed questions about what it is that they want and what they don’t want; and work to your strengths. I’m not a graphite artist, so accepting a commission for a pencil drawing was a bit risky to begin with. From that perspective of course it all went really well 🙂

Was habe ich gelernt?
