Die Warburg_Lüneburg

Die Warburg an der Ilmenau. 18 x 24 cm.

This interesting building was the watchmen’s house. It sits right by the river and on the edge of a wide open space. Back then, this space was where barges full of wood would unload their precious cargo. The wood was stored in the yard and watched over by the watchmen, who sometimes retired to this wee house. I imagine them drinking a lovely cup of hot chocolate in there and gazing out over the river which probably hasn’t changed much since then. I myself have always found this house very beautiful, and I was glad when I was able to paint it on location standing in the sunshine a few days ago.
