Every time I see the roofline of the warehouses in Hamburg’s ‚docklands‘ I get this special feeling. They are incredibly ornate for warehouse roofs! But then again, these warehouses weren’t and aren’t owned by just anybody. The HHLA who operates most of the harbour has its headquarters smack in the middle there, and this building even features towers, turrets, fancy gables and flags. It’s pretty fancy. – For several different reasons, this sketch came out a lot looser than they normally do. It’s really the roofs that matter, but it took me a while to realise that. You can see how I got carried away with windows in the middle. This is where I started the sketch (add: without thinking much about what I was after). I felt after a few minutes that I couldn’t sustain this attention to detail and that I didn’t need to because the sketch was never meant to be about architectural details but about roofs. So there.
Immer, wenn ich die Dächer in der Speicherstadt erspähe, habe ich das Gefühl, was ganz Besonderes anzuschauen. Für Lagerhallendächer sind sie unglaublich aufwendig und verziert! Aber diese Speicher gehörten ja auch historisch betrachtet nicht Hinz & Kunz, sondern reichen Kaufmännern, die weltweit Handel trieben. Die HHLA, die für einen großen Teil des Hafens verantwortlich ist, hat hier ein Bürogebäude (das administrative Hauptquartier?). Dieses Gebäude hat nicht nur schmucke Dächer, sondern auch Türme und Türmchen, einen extrem verzierten Seitengiebel und eine rote Flagge. Wahnsinn. – Aus verschiedenen Gründen ist diese Aquarellskizze mit Tusche viel lockerer geworden als sonst. So genau kann ich nicht sagen, woran das liegt. Ich weiß nur, dass ich da, wo die vielen Fenster sind, angefangen habe. Irgendwie fiel mir dann auf, dass es keinen Sinn macht, so viele Einzelheiten zu zeichnen, wenn es mir eigentlich nur um die Dächer geht. So kam das.
