On a recent outing in the countryside, I spotted a large flock of chickens. Because I am curious about chickens, I sat with them for half an hour and sketched them. I realised that chickens are funny; they run here and there, they rest for a moment, then they run around again, they pick and scratch in the sand, and they continuously cluck and coo ever so softly. Twice all of them ran to the rooster all the same time even though he hadn’t called them. Then they returned. Maybe he had spotted a bird of prey in the air? Only the rooster knows. There was one chicken that huddled in the sand close to the fence and thus close to me, which I liked very much. It staid there when all the other chickens took off. I also liked that 🙂 It looked so cosy and comfortable and not irritated about me at all. Sadly it got up after all just as I was getting ready to sketch it.
