Friends, I have painted trees today which I actually really like! They look so, well, the way I wanted them to look but didn’t dare to hope, if that makes any sense. I am talking about the trees in the background here. For me they are the total stars in this plein-air painting. They didn’t look anything like this, I can tell you. They were right behind the house, dark, heavy and obstructive. In order to give the painting more depth I painted them faintly so that they would recede more. And they did! I used the atomiser in order to get the wild and loose structure established. That was fun! There I was (and I was wearing a dress today too! It was all on :)) handling all my materials and finding that they serve me well. I made sure that I would be relaxed and not hurried with this one and felt, like I said, that the trees required especial attention. The tree on the right side was also ok, and I like its shadow. The other bits about this painting I can live with but I’m not over-enthused by. I started out the session with some horse sketching. This helped in placing two horses where I thought they might work, though later on the beast actually walked up to round about that spot anyway. A heavy and very sudden rain shower brought my session to an abrupt end; the horsies and one more shadow wash were finished at home.

Is so.
